Who is an NRI?
A Non-Resident Indian (NRI) is an Indian citizen who lives outside India. Under foreign exchange rules (FEMA), you are an NRI when you go abroad for work, business or another purpose that shows you intend to stay outside India for an uncertain period. Income tax uses a separate day-count test.
What is the difference between NRI and OCI?
An NRI is an Indian citizen living abroad. An OCI (Overseas Citizen of India) cardholder is a foreign citizen of Indian origin. Both can generally buy residential and commercial property and take Indian home loans.
Are students studying abroad treated as NRIs?
For foreign exchange purposes, students who go abroad to study are generally treated as non-residents, so they can hold NRE and NRO accounts. Their tax status depends on the days they spend in India.
Can NRIs get an Aadhaar card?
Yes. NRIs with a valid Indian passport can apply for Aadhaar at an enrolment centre in India. PAN, not Aadhaar, is the key document for property, loans and tax.
Can I get an Indian home loan while living in the UAE, Singapore, Australia or Malaysia?
Yes. Indian lenders lend to NRIs and OCIs in these countries, subject to their own rules on income, work history and documents. See the country checklists, including UAE, Singapore and Australia.
Can you collect my documents in Dubai or Singapore?
Yes. KLICK NRI offers doorstep document pickup in Singapore and Dubai (for home loans, anywhere in the world), and attestation help in Singapore and the UAE at cost. KLICK NRI Exclusive offer. Subject to change. *Conditions apply.
What changes if I move back to India?
Your loans continue, but your NRE and NRO accounts must be re-designated as resident accounts and NRE interest stops being tax-free. Tell your lender in writing. See moving back to India.
How does the exchange rate affect my EMI?
Your EMI is fixed in rupees, so its cost in dirhams, Singapore dollars, Australian dollars or ringgit moves with the exchange rate. Keep one or two EMIs as a buffer in your Indian account. The EMI calculator shows the rupee amount.
Does KLICK NRI charge for comparing or introducing lenders?
Our compare table and guides are free. KLICK NRI is a referrer and introducer through an authorised DSA, not a lender; any lender fees are the lender's own. See our terms.
What happened to the PIO card?
The PIO card scheme was merged into OCI in 2015. PIO cardholders were asked to convert to OCI cards.
Can an OCI cardholder open NRE and NRO accounts?
Yes. OCI cardholders can generally hold NRE, NRO and FCNR(B) accounts, like NRIs.
How can an NRI get a PAN card?
Apply online through the official PAN service providers, using your passport and overseas address; OCI cardholders use the form for foreign citizens. The card can be sent to an overseas address.
How do I update my bank KYC from abroad?
Most Indian banks let NRIs update KYC by video KYC or by sending self-attested or attested copies of passport, visa or residence permit and overseas address proof. Check your bank's process.
What is the difference between attestation and apostille?
Both authenticate a document signed abroad. Attestation is done by the Indian embassy or consulate; an apostille is issued by your country's designated authority, where that country is in the Hague Apostille Convention. Your lender may prefer one. See power of attorney from abroad.
Is KLICK NRI a bank or a lender?
No. KLICK NRI is a loan comparison and referral service. We introduce clients, through an authorised DSA, to RBI-regulated banks, housing finance companies and NBFCs. Every credit decision is made by the lender.
What is the KLICK NRI Exclusive offer?
Benefits arranged for our clients, such as lower franking charges, a lower processing fee, doorstep document pickup and attestation help at cost. KLICK NRI Exclusive offer. Subject to change. *Conditions apply.
How long does an NRI home loan take?
It varies by lender and by how quickly documents are ready. Once a complete file is with the lender, sanction often takes a few weeks; property checks and a power of attorney can add time.
Can I apply for a home loan on a visit visa?
Lenders usually need a valid work visa, residence permit or OCI card and proof of steady overseas income. A visit visa alone is generally not enough.
When can I talk to someone?
Our team replies on WhatsApp within 30 minutes during business hours, 9 AM to 9 PM Singapore time. You can also book a Google Meet from our home page.
